Gangs, drugs, and violence can be found throughout the streets of Phoenix, but one man is using his lifelong passion to help kids parry the punches the world may throw. Pete Chavez, a former Golden Gloves Champion, a title he shares with greats like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, has been around the sport of boxing most of his life. Despite his love of the sport, Chavez never imagined he would be leading his own boxing foundation, but he thinks it’s something the kids need. The foundation was birthed from Chavez helping a friend of his son’s train, which lead to another one his clients suggesting he start a nonprofit. That was in 2007, fast forward to today and the foundation is home to roughly twenty kids. For Chavez, the foundation is more than just a nonprofit organization to help kids. “The foundation is my whole life, we have literally saved lives. The biggest thing is we are so much more than just boxing. We do feedings, and we give to families at Christmas. My hope is that we can get a lot more people to get involved for the kids,” said Chavez.
